To demonstrate a joint-protective taping
method for turf toe injuries involving the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP)
joint. This tape job aims to limit motion at the big toe and stabilise the
joint after hyperextension trauma.
· GoLevita 38mm Rigid Strapping Tape
· Scissors or tape cutter
Have the patient extend the leg with the foot flat and relaxed.
Palpate the 1st MTP joint to identify the area requiring restriction.
Wrap a 38mm rigid tape around the midfoot
to establish a base.
This anchor will serve as the starting and ending point for the toe stirrups.
Starting medially, wrap a strip around the
big toe and secure it back to the lateral side of the midfoot anchor.
Repeat once or twice depending on the required restriction. Ensure the tape does not impair toe circulation.
If the joint is acutely inflamed or requires further restriction, apply a vertical support strip over the medial joint capsule to limit valgus and dorsiflexion stress.
Secure all stirrups and reinforcement strips with a second midfoot anchor wrap.
Smooth out creases and ensure patient comfort before returning to weight-bearing.
• Minimises movement through the 1st MTP joint to allow inflammation to settle.
• Useful for footballers, soccer players, or anyone with traumatic toe extension injury.
• Over-taping may cause circulatory impairment—monitor capillary refill if uncertain.
• Remove tape post-activity and assess need for reapplication between sessions.
