To demonstrate a clinical taping technique
to support the medial collateral ligament (MCL) following injury, reducing
valgus stress and aiding return to activity.
· GoLevita 38mm Rigid Strapping
Tape
· GoLevita Elastic Adhesive
Bandage (EAB) 75mm
· Optional: Hypoallergenic
underlay such as UnderFix
· Scissors or tape cutter
Position the patient with the knee in
approximately 30 degrees of flexion. This can be achieved by having them place
their heel on the tape roll for stability.
Apply two anchor strips using 38mm rigid
tape:
- One around the lower third of the thigh (do not fully encircle).
- One just above the upper calf (also avoid full circumferential wrap).
This ensures blood flow remains unrestricted while providing anchor points.
Apply multiple stirrup strips across the
medial joint line (MCL area):
- Start from the posterior medial thigh and cross over the MCL.
- Apply a second strip at an opposite angle to form a cross.
- Add a third strip directly over the MCL.
Layer additional stirrups based on the level of support needed.
Use GoLevita’s 75mm EAB to reinforce the
rigid tape:
- Follow the same wrap direction as the underlying rigid strips.
- Ensure a gentle, overlapping tension to reinforce support without restricting
movement.
- Repeat if necessary for extra reinforcement.
Finish by locking off the EAB with rigid tape above and below the knee to secure the wrap in place.
• This method provides support for MCL
injuries by reducing valgus forces across the medial knee.
• Always assess patient comfort and ensure no restriction of blood flow.
• This is a supportive technique, not a substitute for structured
rehabilitation.
• Use caution with acute injuries and consider medical clearance before taping.
